Description

SKOL-AS enables simultaneous triplanar therapeutic action on the patients’s passive and active spinal stability mechanisms and functional structures of the patient’s Central Nervous System. SKOL-AS therapeutic method is one of the few documented methods to affect the passive and active spine stabilization system together with the nervous system which is controlling the aforementioned structures.
The correction with SKOL-AS method and apparatus is dedicated to children and youth suffering the spine curve between 6 and 40 degree of the Cobb’s scale. The device is comprised of a system od pads and springs which enable three-dimensional correction of the passive stabilizing system. Authors of the method develop and present and original mode of treatment of the children with scoliosis, which can be divided into following stages and targets:
1. Elimination of the biomechanical pathologies of passive stabilization
2. Restoration of the structures and functions of local mucles and balance among muscles from the first and the second reference arrangement and also structures around the spine – both on the concave and convex side
3. Posture re-education; which involves a combination of three dimensional active and passive correction of the spine, achieved via proprioceptor stimulation techniques and accompanied by the use of feedback.

Opinion

According to Zielke and Morscher from the Centre of Scoliosis Treatment in Bad Wildungen (Germany): „individual correction of the scoliosis deviations with the mere use of free exercise is impossible”.
The suggested method – which accomodates the latest trends in scoliosis treatment – may and should be applied practically at each stage of scoliosis progression. This gives the child, their parents and therapist if they have one, an opportunity to control the improvement proccess. Appropriate application of the sugessted method and the SKOL-AS device offer children efficient self-control over their posturę, which is much easier after application of appropriate training which is suggested in the method.
This therapy enables strenghtening and improvement of relevant muscles functioning while also increasing recognition and feeling to muscle tension. This enables the individual to execute appropriate control of bodily posturę and can help with self-image.

Scoliosis therapy based on SKOL-AS methodology and apparatus is performed at the beginning in recumbent position and afterwards in high positions which are sitting, standing and everyday activities.

Features of the SKOL-AS

  • Activation of the passive and active spine stabilization system
  • Rehabilitation in the sagittal, coronal and transverse plane
  • Stimulation of the nerve system
  • Supporting the physiotherapist’s rehabilitation program

FAQ

Who can be corrected with the SKOL-AS methodology and device?

Correction using the SKOL-AS method and apparatus is recommended for children and adolescents whose curvature ranges from 6 to 40 degrees in the Cobb’s scale. Such persons will be qualified for exercises after the initial anthropometric, capacity and fitness tests, and having no medical contraindications. During the implementation of the SKOL-AS program, control tests will be performed systematically. In the future, SKOL-AS programs are planned for people with a greater degree of curvature.

How is the habit of incorrect posture formed?

In pathological states, e.g. scoliosis, the balance is disturbed. There is a simple relationship between the state of active muscle tension and the shape of the spine. If the state of muscle tension changes, the shape of the spine will change and vice versa. Each change in the shape of the spine causes a change in the active stabilizing mechanism. The changed anatomical conditions in the passive and active stabilizing mechanism affect the stimulation of the receptors. Muscle receptors are sensitive to shortening and stretching (lengthening) of individual muscles, and the articular, capsular and ligamentous receptors inform about the position of individual joints. This altered information from proprioceptors with linear and angular position in space is transmitted to the central nervous system, where it is compared with the program encoded there. If this pathology lasts a long time, a habit will form – a habit of an incorrect posture.

Where you can find out what are the assumptions of the SKOL-AS therapy?

During the training "Innovation in the correction of scoliosis - SKOL-AS methodology and apparatus", conducted by the authors of the methodology of scoliosis correction, Andrzej Suchanowski and Andrzej Stolarz. They are carried out in the form of lectures and a practical part, covering a total of 3 training days.

The theoretical part, led by Andrzej Suchanowski, includes lectures on, among others the range of human motor functions, the morphophysiology of the active and passive stabilizing mechanism of the spine, neurophysiological determinants of the formation of motor habits and the principles of three-factor correction of lateral curvatures of the spine.

During practical workshops, conducted by Andrzej Stolarz, the participants will learn about the principles of measuring and controlling the effectiveness of corrective treatment in lateral curvatures of the spine There will also be a demonstration and demonstration of exercises that take into account the biomechanical aspects of changes in the passive and active spine stabilization mechanism. Participants will also learn about the construction and functioning of the SKOL-AS apparatus and the procedure of applying a new apparatus design in the correction of spine dysfunction.

Does the SKOL-AS methodology take into account international recommendations of scoliosis therapy?

The proposed methodology is based on the guidelines and recommendations developed by SOSORT.

  • The most important element of scoliosis kinesiotherapy are active exercises leading to three-dimensional deformation correction.
  • Conducting physiotherapy in scoliosis should result from adopting one of the most probable theories explaining the etiology of this disease, i.e. neuromuscular imbalances.
  • The treatment should stop the progression of the curvature, prevent respiratory system dysfunctions, protect the child from possible future back pain and improve the body shape by correcting posture.
  • The exercises must lead to stabilize the corrected position of the spine.

One of the leading authorities - an expert in the treatment of scoliosis in Germany, the director of the Scoliosis Treatment Center in Bad Wildungen, Dr. K. Zielke believes that individual correction of scoliotic deviations solely by means of free exercises alone is impossible.

How is the SKOL-AS methodology different from other methods?

The SKOL-AS method of treatment is one of the few described therapeutic forms that comprehensively affect the passive and active stabilizing mechanism of the spine, as well as the nervous system controlling these structures. It adheres to the principles and the possibility of implementing the methodological assumptions in force in kinesiotherapy.

What therapeutic methods can be used in exercising with the SKOL-AS apparatus?

The main therapeutic method is the exercise methodology prepared by Andrzej Suchanowski and Andrzej Stolarz. It is based to some extent on the Lehnert-Schroth method and PNF. The specificity of the therapeutic treatment of SKOL-AS is the inclusion of training methodologies that allow to effectively shape both the possibilities and the correctness of the movement technique while re-educating the body posture.

Practically all therapeutic methods used to date deal with the process of restoring muscle length and strength. Unfortunately, only a few try to restore control of the nervous system over the proper functioning of the muscles. The SKOL-AS therapeutic system belongs to them.

How are the stages of scoliosis correction with the SKOL-AS apparatus?

1.The basic stage of curvature correction (recumbent position)

2. The essential stage of functional correction in high positions

  • - posture re-education
  • - correction and autocorrection in hight positions (sitting, standing)
Are electronics used in the SKOL-AS apparatus?

No. The SKOL-AS apparatus uses mechanics as a support for the therapy of scoliosis and a technical solution enabling the activation and use of the bio-feedback mechanism to mobilize the nervous control to control the correctness of the correction taught.
